Staying Safe for Halloween

With Halloween today and this weekend, we thought we would share some tips and ideas for enjoying it safely!

For trick-or-treaters

  • Stay visible: Wear reflective tape on costumes, carry glow sticks or touches, and choose light-coloured costumes so drivers and cyclists can see you.
  • Travel in groups: Never go trick-or-treating alone. Use the buddy system to stay safe and only trick or treat with people you know. Where possible, always take a parent or carer with you.
  • Plan your route: Stay in familiar neighbourhoods, and follow a pre-arranged route. Walk on pathways and cross streets at corners or pedestrian crossings.
  • Be seen: Walk, don't run. Wear comfortable, well-fitting shoes, and make sure masks and hats do not obstruct your vision.
  • Be cautious: Only go to houses that are well-lit and decorated. Never enter a stranger's home, and stay a few paces back from the doorstep while not taking a sweet.
  • Check sweets: Have a parent or carer inspect all treats before eating them. Throw away any unwrapped or suspicious items.
  • Stay safe around flames: Make sure your costume is flame-resistant and avoid walking near open flames or lit candles.
