A day of Musical Magic: House Music Cup 2026

The air in the Dane Court Grammar School theatre was electric this week, as students gathered for the annual House Music Cup on Wednesday the 4th March. It was a spectacular showcase of talent, grit, and harmony, with our six houses—Barcelona, Delphi, Neuchâtel, Helsinki, Sorrento, and Tallinn—battling it out for the top spot.

Our external judges, all professional musicians, were blown away by the excellent quality of the performances. They particularly noted the impressive surge in participation this year, proving that the musical spirit at Dane Court is stronger than ever.

The competition was split into three distinct categories, each bringing its own unique energy to the stage.

Instrumental

The evening kicked off with technical precision and emotive arrangements.

  • 1st Place: Sorrento – A well rehearsed rendition of Birds of a Feather by Billie Eilish.

  • 2nd Place: Neuchâtel – An energetic take on Mr. Brightside by The Killers with an awesome Alto Sax feature!

  • 3rd Place: Delphi – A cinematic performance of Hans Zimmer’s Interstellar with 22 performers on stage!

Vocal

The vocal category tugged at the heartstrings, featuring some truly powerhouse soloists and ensembles.

  • 1st Place: Helsinki – A hauntingly beautiful What Was I Made For? by Billie Eilish, with stunning three part harmonies.

  • 2nd Place: Sorrento – A nostalgic and melodic cover of Linger by The Cranberries.

  • 3rd Place: Barcelona – A moody, atmospheric version of Teardrop by Massive Attack.

Band

The volume went up and the roof nearly came off during the band performances!

  • 1st Place: Delphi – A high-octane, energic performance of American Idiot by Green Day.

  • 2nd Place: Barcelona – A perfectly themed rendition of Barcelona by Ed Sheeran.

  • 3rd Place: Tallinn – An ambitious and impressive Bohemian Rhapsody by Queen, complete with Sax and Trumpet solos!

The Final Standings

The overall scores were a combination of the judges' rankings and participation points, rewarding the houses that managed to get the most students involved on stage.

Rank House Total Points
1st Barcelona 166
2nd Sorrento 163
3rd Delphi 154

Congratulations to Barcelona for clinching the title in such a tight race!

A Note from the Music Department

The Music Department is incredibly proud of every single student who took part. Your commitment to rehearsals, your work ethic, and the sheer joy you brought to the process made the event a triumph.

A special shout-out goes to the House Captains who stepped up to organize their teams and play to their houses' strengths. While a couple of captains might have taken a "relaxed" approach to their duties this year, the talent of the performers ensured the show was a hit regardless!

Well done to everyone involved for making the House Music Cup 2026 an event to remember.'

Developing knowledgeable and caring young people who help to create a better and more peaceful world.
