Maths Inspiration Lectures Trip, London

On our recent visit to the Maths Inspiration lectures in London, a group of 20 students had the opportunity to experience a series of engaging and thought-provoking talks delivered by leading mathematical communicators. The event aimed to showcase how mathematics underpins many aspects of the real world, and it certainly delivered on that goal.
Aoife Hunt opened with an insightful exploration of how maths informs crowd movement and safety planning, giving students a fascinating look at modelling in action.
Zoe Griffiths followed with Numbers in the News encouraging students to think critically about how statistics are used in the media, highlighting the importance of numerical literacy in everyday life. Hugh Hunt talked about Maths in a Spin, a lively and memorable demonstration of the mathematics behind rotation, gyroscopes, and engineering. Finally, Colin Wright’s Patterns, Predictions and Juggling blended performance and mathematics, revealing the surprising structure and theory behind juggling patterns.
Students responded very positively to all the talks, each taking away something different—from an appreciation of mathematical modelling to a new interest in applied engineering or data interpretation. Overall, the trip was a great success, providing an enjoyable and enriching experience that demonstrated the power and relevance of mathematics beyond the classroom.
