Extra-curricular and Super-curricular
Dane Court Sixth Form students are encouraged to engage in a wide range of super-curricular activities and leadership opportunities to support them with their aspirations for future study and career pathways. We also offer a range of enjoyable extra-curricular clubs and opportunities in areas such as sport, music and the Duke of Edinburgh's Award (DofE).
Current super-curricular programmes include the following:
Lectures for the Open-minded Programme
Students are invited to attend weekly Wednesday lunchtime guest lectures from university academics, top professionals and Dane Court alumni. Wednesdays, 1.45pm in C9.
Aspiring Medics Programme
Includes advanced dissection club, work experience placement opportunities, UCAT entrance test workshops, mock interviews and guest talks from a range of medical professionals.
Aspiring Lawyer Programme
Includes mock trial competition, wider reading and debating, LNAT entrance test preparation workshop and visits to Canterbury Crown Court.
Oxbridge Programme
Includes mock interviews, entrance test practice, 1-1 mentoring, super-curricular talks and support with summer schools.
Apprenticeship Programme
Includes apprenticeship fair and workshops and 1-1 support with applications and interviews.
Debating and Model UN
Students have the chance to discuss current affairs and ethical dilemmas at our lively weekly debating club. We also offer the opportunity to participate in Model United Nations competitions.
IB Science Fair Competition and Olympiads
Students work in collaborative interdisciplinary groups to produce a professional scientific research poster in response to a challenging question e.g. 'how can life be made sustainable on Mars?' Students present their research to guest judges from local science firms (e.g. Fuji Film and Thanet Earth) and universities. Students are also encouraged to enter national Olympiad problem-solving competitions for STEM subjects.
Stella Maris Magazine
A student-led magazine which features essay competitions (drawn from university sources) and creative writing challenges, alumni interviews and articles.
Biodiverse Garden Project
A student-led project to improve the biodiversity of the school site by constructing a garden including features such as a wildflower meadow, bug hotel and water feature. Made possible by the Thanet Earth Community Champion Project.
Music
There are lots of opportunities for Sixth Form students to get involved with music and performance within the school. Options include senior choir, jazz band, orchestra and ukulele club.
Other Clubs
Other extra-curricular clubs which have run in recent years include Chess, Dungeons and Dragons, Japanese Ikebana and tea ceremony and a host of drama opportunities (e.g. RSC, National Theatre Connections and in-school shows such as The Addams Family).
Leadership
A wide range of leadership roles are available in the sixth form, including Head Student Team, House Captains and mental health ambassadors. Year 12 students also make a valuable contribution to the community as academic peer mentors for students in Year 11 and in KS3 and as subject ambassadors. Sixth Form students also play a role in running extra-curricular clubs and societies for students in the younger years. Student leaders gain valuable skills in communication, public speaking, organisation and event management.
Sport
A wide range of sports clubs are available for our 6th Form students to attend, including basketball, football, running club, badminton, trampolining, American football, rounders, basketball and cricket, all at different times throughout the academic year.
Competitive sport is available and the fixtures we organise are determined by demand. We always enter a U19 boys football team and U18 girls football team in the Kent Cup and play local Under 18 Netball.
We are affiliated to many of the major sports associations which allows those with particular prowess to be put forward for county trials.'

Trips
Our sixth form students have the opportunity to attend many subject-based and extracurricular trips. Trips range from West End musicals, subject-specific trips such as the Juniper Hall Geography Field Trip, and the Stratford English trip as well as language exchanges. The Tokyo trip took place in 2024, and the next Japan trip - visiting Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka, Hiroshima, and Nara - will be in 2027
Civic Engagement: CAS and Service Learning
Our IBDP and IBCP students are encouraged to take part in a range of civic engagement activities as part of their CAS (creativity, activity service) or service learning programmes. Current in-school civic engagement projects include the 'outreach to the elderly project' (including delivering tech workshops to the local WI group and supporting local sufferers with dementia), the biodiverse garden project, a road safety campaign, charity fundraising events for Business, and the Health and Social Care pantomime for residents of Yoakley care home. Students also complete a wide range of independent enrichment projects outside of school, from volunteering in beach ecology clean-ups to sport coaching.
